Updates

Now that Imperion has officially launched in some regions of the world, we’re making a few updates to how we develop and communicate changes to the Echoes of Astra rules.

A clearer record of rules changes

Going forward, changes to the Comprehensive Rules will be recorded in patch notes (found at the bottom of the page), creating a clear history of what changed. When we plan a rules change or addendum, we’ll announce it in advance, with the amount of notice depending on the severity of the change.

If a card ban becomes necessary, we’ll announce it at least 30 days before it takes effect. We hope careful testing and focused set design will help us avoid bans whenever possible. Still, as a game evolves, changes like these may sometimes be necessary.

New Change of Control rules addendum

As of yesterday, the Comprehensive Rules include a new section (near the bottom) on Change of Control. It explains what happens when a card — such as a unit stolen by Nerezza, Umbrasco Scion — changes controllers, including how the card is reset before the transfer. The most important parts of the rule addendum are:

When a card is stolen, the player that took control treats it as their own. All cards must be “Reset” before transferal.

  • A stolen unit will be moved to the new controller's staging area exhausted. Attached equipment is destroyed. Temporary effects, damage, and counters are removed.

When a stolen card leaves the battlefield (staging/combat zones), it returns to the owner's relevant zone.

Further examples and details exist in the rules section. The reason for this addendum is to make card ownership clear and avoid confusion when cards are moving across the table. Maintaining visibility of the card to the owner is important for property accountability.

There is a new glossary term for "reset" of a card (restoring to its base state). The "reset" of a stolen card is intended to support future mechanics and card design that may interact oddly with control change. If any part of the new section is unclear, please let us know. Your questions can help us identify where additional examples would be useful.

The official Judge Exam is live

The official Judge Exam is now available on AstraPlay. Sign in and look for the Google Form linked in the sidebar.

Judge applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Approval will involve judgment beyond the multiple-choice score: we’ll also consider how applicants approach and explain the short-answer scenarios.

Thanks for helping us keep Echoes of Astra clear, fair, and fun to play. Any questions, you can always reach the team on Discord.
